How do you offer bird seeds to your feathery friends in your backyard, BOTTLE-FED, WOODEN BARN, or GROUND PLATFORM FEEDER?
1– Gadjit Soda Bottle Bird Feeding Starter Kit –
These can be made from
regular Pepsi or Coca Cola bottles, or most any other soda bottles on the market with the same size cap and can be put together in ten minutes.
BOTTLE-FED (regular soda bottles)
What do these five bottles have in common?
They all have the same size twist-off cap, measuring 1 inch across.
1 – Soda Bottle Feed
The kit includes a plastic base made of an outer circle (for the hanger part) and the inner circle which makes up the seed tray. Break off the outer circle. To a plastic Pepsi or Coke bottle or similar bottle, empty the liquid, rinse and let it air dry. Puncture holes near the bottom of the bottle on opposite sides and insert the hanger part. With the use of a funnel, fill the bottle with small fine seeds, such as the Nyjer or Thistle Seed or Parakeet seed, ushing a funnel to make this easy.
Special note:
These feeders’ opening is too small for larger seeds, such as Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, nuts, and corn. Then replace the regular cap with the seed tray. 47 Afterwards, decorate the bottle with regular or crystal stickers, like shown in the picture below.
2 – Wooden Barn Bird Feeder Kits:
There are numerous wooden bird feeder kits on the market (Amazon.com and Temu.com) to choose from which are fun and easy to put together. These can also handle the larger bird seeds that the bottle feeders cannot (Black Oil Sunflower seeds, Stater Bros. Wild Bird Seed, etc).
They normally come with their own paint supply, paintbrushes and instructions and are designed to be hung up. Most measure between 5” and up to 8” square or rectangular.
3 – Ground Platform Open Topless Boxes:
These three open half boxes measure 8” square for the largest one, 5” x 6”, and 4.5” square and can be put directly on the ground. We recommend that you decorate the sides facing out with water-based paint and/or stickers. Some native birds, such as the mourning dove, prefer ground platform feeders, as it is too difficult for them to sit on hanging feeders.
SUGGESTED SELECTION OF BIRD SEEDS
1 – Pennington Select Wild Finch Blend – excellent seeds for Goldfinches, Purple and House Finches, Mourning Doves, Sparrows, Junco, and other species. Walmart carries this brand.
2 – Black Oil Sunflower Seeds – Good for birds with thick beaks who are able to crack open the outer shell – Sparrows and Finches.
3 – Nyjer or Thistle Seed – a tiny black seed, a favorite of the American and LesservGoldfinches. At my feeders, other small songbirds enjoy this selection, also Sparrows. (see article below*)
4 – Parakeet Bird Seed – usually purchased for indoor caged pet birds. But because of the small size of the seeds, this is a good selection for our Soda Bottle Bird Feeder Station, too.
5 – Stater Brothers Grocery Store carries a brand of wild bird seed 20# bag at around $14.00 which is a good selection.
